The main purpose for applying a preload to machine tool spindle bearings is to increase their rigidity, improve running accuracy, and prevent sliding of the rolling elements at high speed. Usually a preload is applied to bearings by using two or more in combination, such as angular contact ball bearings or tapered roller bearings. Cylindrical roller bearings can be preloaded by making the radial internal clearance slightly negative. |
